Research project CIRK
Development of a global 3-D model of the troposphere.
This reseach project belongs to CWI's research program
Mathematics & the Environment,
and is one of the projects of
MAS1.1 Numerical Algorithms for Air Quality Modelling.
It was started in 1994.

Project description
The goal of the CIRK project is the development of a global 3-D
transport chemistry model of the troposphere including
source and sink terms, and troposphere/stratosphere exchange processes.
This project is a co-operation between
- CWI (Center for Mathematics and Computer Science),
- Numerical schemes for
- (passive) advection on a sphere
- stiff ODEs originating from atmospheric chemistry
- Vector processing
- Massively parallel processing
- IMAU
(Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research. Universiteit Utrecht).
- Modelling of the vertical exchange in the boundary-layer
- Parametrisations
- RIVM (National Institute of Public Health and Environmental Protection).
- Preparation of input data
- KNMI (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute).
- Vertical transport in the boundary layer
- Exchange of trace gases between stratosphere and troposphere
- Deep cumulus convection
