Relation between CWI and MC

There is no difference between CWI and MC: the institute that was known (in the days of old) by the name Mathematisch Centrum, Amsterdam (Mathematical Centre - MC) is now (since 1983) called: CWI - Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica (Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science).

The Mathematisch Centrum was founded on 11 February 1946. As the national institute for advanced research in Pure and Applied Mathematics, and later on in Mathematics and Computer Science, it rapidly increased in size from the one first employee to about 150 in 1970, and 220 in the eighties. Its site has changed from a building in the Nieuwe Kerkstraat, through a couple of rooms at the Municipal University (now University of Amsterdam), a floor at the Wijttenbachstraat and (most of the time) 1.5 former school building at Tweede Boerhaavestraat 49, to a new (1980) building of its own at Kruislaan 413, Amsterdam.

The name Mathematisch Centrum is not used any more: CWI is now administered by the Foundation Stichting Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica.
