Abstract

Recently, a large number of Web-related document models and associated formats and tools has been introduced, along with a similar plethora of acronyms. To develop an intuition of the current trends in document modeling and processing on the Web, it is necessary to understand the scope of these models, and their mutual relationships. Rather than discuss the various acronyms themselves, we discuss document modeling and processing from various perspectives. In particular, we discuss work done in the electronic publishing, hypertext and multimedia research communities and the various applications of this research on the Web. Additionally, we look at some current trends in document processing, focusing on the efforts that address the integration and interoperability of the various models.
