Previous research interests include document models for hypermedia and synchronized multimedia on the Web (SMIL).

I am a board member of Informatics Europe, the association of computer science departments and research laboratories in Europe and neighbouring areas. I am part-time professor of multimedia interaction at the University of Amsterdam, in the Informatics Institute. I was the action line leader, from 2011-2012, of ICT-mediated Human Activity of EIT ICT Labs, whose goal is to accelerate European ICT innovation by bringing people together from different countries, disciplines and organizations.

I was the main organiser of SSMS10, the 5th Summer School on Multimedia Semantics. I co-edited a special issue of the Multimedia Systems Journal on the canonical processes of media production. I was co-programme chair for SAMT 2008. I co-edited a special issue for IEEE Intelligent Systems on AI and Cultural Heritage (March/April 2009 24(2) pp23-25).
