The aim of the project is to develop a mathematical model of protein networks in red blood cells. The motivation of the problem is to clarify the development of a red blood cell into about eight different types of cells. The model consists of a biochemical reaction system as is often used for metabolic and signalling networks. The task is to formulate the model based on biochemistry, to carry out mathematical analysis of the model, and to calibrate the model based on measurements of the chemical concentrations in cells. Weekly interactions with the researchers in medicine are necessary.
The project is carried out in close cooperation with the research group of Professor Frank Grosveld and Professor Sjaak Philipsen (Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam, The Netherlands).
The research is expected to result in publications in journals and conference proceedings, in reports, and in lectures at conferences. The language used in the project is English but Dutch is spoken when all persons present have command of this language. The appointment of the post-doc may start any time. The appointment of the CWI post-doc is for maximally the duration of the project. The project has started 1 November 2006 and will run for three years but may be extended.
A candidate is expected to have completed a doctoral degree or about to complete the requirements for this degree in mathematics, in biology, or in engineering. Basic knowledge of control and system theory is useful but this can be at an elementary level. Interest in the life sciences is necessary. An appointment as post-doc is made on a temporary basis for a definite period restricted to the duration of the project.

Bij het CWI cluster Modelling, Analysis, and Simulation, bestaat een vacature voor een post-doc (m/v) in het kader van het project Modelering van proteine netwerken van rode-bloedcellen. Het project wordt gefinancierd door het Netherlands Bioinformatics Center vanuit het programma Biorange en project SP.2.3.2. Het project SP.2.3.2. is gestart op 1 november 2006.
Doel van het project is een realistisch model op te stellen van proteine netwerken in rode-bloedcellen. De motivatie van het probleem is de ontwikkeling te begrijpen van een rode-bloedcel naar acht verschillende vormen van dergelijke cellen. Het model wordt beschreven als een biochemisch reactiesysteem zoals veel gedaan wordt door voor metabolische netwerken en signaalnetwerken. De taak is een model te formuleren op basis van biochemie, wiskundige analyse te verrichten met model, en het model te valideren op basis van meetinge van chemische concentraties in de cel. Wekelijkse interacties met de onderzoekers bij de Erasmus Universiteit zijn nodig voor een goede gang van het onderzoek.
Het project wordt uitgevoerd in nauwe samenwerking met de onderzoekgroep van Professor Frank Grosveld en Professor Sjaak Philipsen (Erasmus Universiteit Medisch Centrum, Rotterdam).
Het betreffende onderzoek wordt geacht te leiden tot publikaties in tijdschriften en in conferentieverslagen, tot rapporten en tot voordrachten op conferenties. Van een kandidaat wordt verwacht dat hij of zij is gepromoveerd in de wiskunde, of in de biologie, of in de technische wetenschappen, of binnenkort hierin zal promoveren. Voorkennis van systeem- en regeltheorie is nuttig. Belangstelling voor onderzoek in de levenswetenschappen is nodig. Indiensttreding, als post-doc, geschiedt in een tijdelijk dienstverband voor de tijdsduur van het project. Het project is gestart op 1 november 2006 en loopt drie jaar maar kan worden verlengd.
