Not With a Whimper

Steven Pemberton

Well, I'm still here, just. I announced last issue that I am leaving the Bulletin to move to interactions, and so I am, but until someone takes over the editorship of the Bulletin, well, someone has to do it...

And quite honestly, I wanted to do this issue, because it's such an exciting one, and it would be great to go out with a bang. A few months ago, Jim Miller asked me if I was interesting in doing a special issue on the Apple Advanced Technology Group, as they were being disbanded, and had a lot to tell about what they had done. Of course, I was delighted, and he said he'd edit the special feature into the bargain.

I hope you'll agree that it has turned into a fantastic issue. Thanks Jim!

Errata

A couple of errors managed to creep into recent issues while we weren't looking. The caption of the photo of people with fish, on page 67 of the October 1997 issue should have read:

"Workshop Participants posing with the completed fish-bone cause and effect diagram. Left to right: Keith Karn, Xerox Corporation, USA; Tim White, Eastman Kodak Company, USA; Jill Drury, The MITRE Corporation, USA; Marc Krolczyk, Xerox Corporation, USA; Vibeke Jorgensen, Kommunedata, Denmark; Anette Zobbe, Kommunedata, Denmark; Gerard Jorna, Philips Corporate Design, The Netherlands; Tom Perry, Xerox Corporation, USA; Julianne Chatelain, Trellix Corporation, USA; Ronald Baecker, University of Toronto, Canada; Jose Madeira Garcia, Autodesk, USA; Kaisa Vaananen-Vainio-Mattila, Nokia, Finland; Stephanie Rosenbaum, Tec-Ed, Inc., USA; (not pictured: Judith Rattle, Philips Corporate Design, The Netherlands)."

Three references were missing from the paper IT Outsourcing: Some Implications for Building Usable IT Systems in the January 1998 issue. They are:

Willcocks, Lacity & Fitzgerald (95) IT Outsourcing in Europe and the USA: Assessment Issues OXIIM paper RDP 95/2

Lacity, M. C., Willcocks, L. P., & Feeny, D. (1995) Sourcing Information Technology Capability: a Framework for Decision Making. OXIIM PAPER RDP 95/3

Harrison, M. C., Henneman, R. L. and Blatt L. A. (1994) . In: Bias, R. G. and Mayhew, D. J. (eds) (1994) Cost Justifying Usability. Academic Press: Boston

The Future

Well, I can tell you now, I'll still be editing the next issue, so that bang may yet turn into a whimper. But there just may be someone in place in time for the October issue (I hope). In the meantime, if you need to contact the editor, whoever it is, use the chi-Bulletin-Editor@acm.org email address to ensure you get to the right person.

I've enjoyed editing the SIGCHI Bulletin the last 4+ years, I hope you've enjoyed what I've done, and I hope that you and I will enjoy interactions to the same extent too!
