Chinese Preliminary

Seeded were Chang Hao, Ma Xiaochun and Yu Bin. Invited were Chen Zude and Zhang Xuan. The players Shao Weigang and Wang Lei (b) were selected via preliminaries.

The preliminary tournament had 8 participants, and started with two rounds.
Round 1 (2002-01-04): Shao Weigang beats Hu Yaoyu, Kong Jie beats Zhou Heyang (sgf), Gu Li beats Liu Jin, Wang Lei beats Luo Xihe (sgf).
Round 2 (2002-01-05): Shao Weigang beats Kong Jie (sgf), Hu Yaoyu beats Zhou Heyang (sgf), Wang Lei beats Gu Li (sgf), Luo Xihe beats Liu Jin (sgf).
That eliminated Zhou Heyang and Liu Jin, who lost twice. Shao Weigang and Wang Lei, who won twice, played a game won by Wang Lei (sgf). That gave a place to Wang Lei. The remaining five players played a small knockout tournament won by Shao Weigang.

North American Preliminary

Two North American Preliminaries were held: a Western in San Francisco, won by the 19-year-old amateur Jie Li, and an Eastern in New York, won by Feng Yun, 9p.

The best placed US citizens, Jimmy Cha, 4p, in the Western, and Huiren Yang, 1p, in the Eastern tournaments, played a playoff won by the latter.

On Oct 11-13, 2001, the 3rd Latin American Go Championship was held. This also served as the South American Preliminary for the 1st Toyota & Denso Cup. It was won by Fernando Aguilar (Argentina).

On Jan 12-13, 2002, the Oceania Preliminaries were held in Brisbane, Australia. The winner was Yiming Guo (8d).
