SMIL: Multimedia and device independency go hand in hand
-
Device independency:
employ the medium that works best for a specific
device, e.g:
-
text on a PDA,
-
speech on a mobile phone,
-
video on a hi-end desktop.
-
SMIL documents can automatically adapt to:
-
different devices
-
preferred media types
-
SMIL authors can:
-
Provide text descriptions of all media objects, similar to
HTML's <img> (alt, title, longdesc, etc.).
-
specify media objects in alternative formats in case the
end-user device doesn't support a particular (proprietary)
encoding.
-
specify the layout of media items relative to the
dimensions of the player's viewport.
-
specify entirely different (i.e. device-specific) layout
strategies.
