Multimedia on the Web
Notes for presentation given on 16th September 2003 as
part of the Web
Information Systems course.
Requirements for MM on the Web
Multimedia
Combination of different media in a single presentation.
Even better, in a timed presentation including links
(termed hypermedia or time-based hypermedia or interactive multimedia).
Web languages
XML etc. (as described in previous weeks). Need to define
a particular application language. This needs processing
tools. Need to specify what the
elements in the language mean. For example, BNF of time specification
in SMIL, e.g. the clipBegin attribute.
SMIL
- CWI SMIL page
- An older tutorial (in pdf) which shows alternatives for ways of
specifying temporal and spatial layout.
- SMIL
4 hour tutorial Note that this needs to be viewed
in Internet Explorer Version 6.0 or newer. (Displayed
on 16th using Version 6.0.2800.1106.)
To run this XHTML+SMIL-encoded tutorial, do the following:
- Make sure the window content display is
active by clicking on it.
- Press alt-space to focus on the next link.
- Press return to trigger the next link.
-
By default, the focus stays on the next link. From now on, all
you should need to do is press return to go to the next
slide. If this stops working, repeat steps 1 and 2.
-
To return to the first slide, reload the document by pressing
F5.
-
The second sheet has hyperlinks to sheets throughout the
presentation. Clicking on these will remove the focus from the
next link, so you will need to repeat steps 1 and 2 to go further.
