Lynda Hardman

picture of Lynda Hardman I am a Manager of Research & Strategy and a member of the Human-Centered Data Analytics research group at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

My current research includes creating linked-data driven, user-centric applications for exploring information. Currently I am investigating the use of augmented reality for exploring brain regions and related brain diseases through the Linked Brain Data repository representing neuroscience literature. At at higher level, I am interested in user-centric interaction design in the context of developing technologies. Past projects include LinkedTV, on creating links from broadcast audiovisual media automatically, and Fish4Knowledge, investigating user interfaces for exploring repositories of fish videos for biologists, EventMedia within the PetaMedia network of excellence, K-Space NoE and MultimediaN/E-Culture. Previous research interests include document models for hypermedia and synchronized multimedia on the Web (SMIL).

I am the director of Amsterdam Data Science (ADS), a regional ecosystem for data science researchers from academia, industry and government to share ideas, pursue research, and foster talent. ADS is a partner of the national network Data Science Platform Netherlands (DSPN).

I am the European Director of LIAMA, a collaboration between CWI, INRIA and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Automation.

I was the president of Informatics Europe, the association of computer science departments and research laboratories in Europe and neighbouring areas, from 2016-2017 and past-president 2018-2019. Previous to this I was a board member from 2012-2015. As founding chair of the Women in Informatics Research and Education working group I edited the first edition of the booklet More Women in Informatics Research & Education. I edited the research and society section on Women in ICT Research and Education in ERCIM News 104. In 2013 I was general chair of ECSS 2013, the annual event for deans, department chairs and senior faculty of Informatics Europe members.

I am part-time professor of Multimedia Discourse Interaction at the University of Utrecht, at the Institute of Information and Computing Sciences in the Interaction Technology group.

I was the action line leader of ICT-mediated Human Activity, from 2011-2012, of EIT Digital , whose goal is to accelerate European ICT innovation by bringing people together from different countries, disciplines and organizations.

I am an area editor for the Journal of Web Semantics and was a member of the editorial board of the New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia 1993-2016. I was the main organiser of SSMS10, the 5th Summer School on Multimedia Semantics. I co-edited a special issue for IEEE Intelligent Systems on AI and Cultural Heritage (March/April 2009 24(2) pp23-25). I co-edited a special issue of the Multimedia Systems Journal on the Canonical Processes of Media Production. I was co-programme chair for SAMT 2008. Steven Pemberton and I co-edited a special issue of ERCIM News on The Future Web.

I ran the Generating and viewing links in video project week of User System Interaction at the TU/e from 2003-2015.
