Total: 6,5 PM 4.1 (2 PM) Participation in W3C MMTF (http://www.w3.org/2001/sw/BestPractices/MM/): Work on the "Image Annotation on the SW" document (http://www.w3.org/TR/swbp-image-annotation) Use cases (http://www.w3.org/TR/swbp-image-annotation/#use_cases) Solutions for the use cases (http://www.w3.org/TR/swbp-image-annotation/#examples) Maintainance of resource web pages (http://www.w3.org/2001/sw/BestPractices/MM/resources/Resources.html), tools web pages (http://www.w3.org/2001/sw/BestPractices/MM/resources/Tools.html) Studied various top-level mm ontology models, starting from MPEG-7 (Hunter, Tsinaraki, DMAG, INA). Updated MMTF Image Annotation on the Semantic Web: Vocabularies Overview (http://www.w3.org/2001/sw/BestPractices/MM/resources/Vocabularies.html). Connection with the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) model that is used in the Digital Library community. Goal: to have a translation of MPEG-7 to SW standards (OWL) This study led to the conclusion that a straightforward translation of MPEG-7 to SW OWL is problematic, therefore a modular approach is favoured. Kick-off for W3C Multimedia Semantics Incubator Group (http://www.w3.org/2005/Incubator/mmsem/). The new Incubator Group is chartered to show how metadata interoperability can be achieved by using Semantic Web technologies to integrate existing multimedia metadata standards. The deliverables will be an XG Report on using Semantic Web languages and tools for multimedia metadata interoperability and an XG Report with use cases showing best practices for annotation multimedia content on the Web and the advantages of having explicit semantics for such annotations. CWI's Raphael Troncy is co-chair. Submitted input for mm ontology infrastructure to AceMedia call for requirements (http://www.acemedia.org/aceMedia/files/multimedia_ontology/mm-ontology-call-requirements-2005-12-23.pdf). General issues, type of information the mm ontology framework should cover, requirements for the language(s) to be used and its expressivity to represent the mm ontology (http://www.acemedia.org/aceMedia/files/multimedia_ontology/cfr/MMTF-Multimedia_Ontology.pdf) 4.5 (0,5 PM) Clarification of contribution. CWI to collaborate with QMUL on a web-based application in this field: image classifier, based on biologically inspired image classification algorithms and incorporating user relevance feedback module. CWI will contribute on the semantic interface of the application, and also possibly (partially) on query expansion techniques. Contribution to the state of the art report. 5.1 (1.5 PM) Draft use cases for extension: Referencing part of multimedia document, Describing the spatio-temporal structure of multimedia documents, Describing the logical structure of multimedia documents, Describing multimedia documents using several ontologies Liaison with 4.1. It has been identified that the issues posed by the use cases can be dealt with by a properly modeled mm ontology. Link to IPTC with NewsML standard. NewsML is a method/standard for packaging, relating, and managing diverse pieces of media. Currently, the new version of this standard is under development under the name NewsML 2 Architecture (NAR - http://www.iptc.org/NAR/) The basic goal of NAR is to provide a single generic model for exchanging all kinds of newsworthy information, thus providing a framework for a future family of IPTC news exchange standards. We are working to help bring NewsML2 to the Semantic Web. Our aim is to express the NewsML2 model (currently based on UML) in OWL. Then, we shall develop conversion tools that will aid in asserting NewsML metadata in a RDF store. Advantages include improved search capabilities and presentation/navigation options, integration with CMS systems and a wide range of possible applications. This can be a test-bed on how to bridge the interoperability gap between different metadata syntaxes. 5.2 (0,5 PM) Contribution in survey and discussion for mm metadata repositories. Clarification of criteria for the survey, filling in details for specific repositories. 5.3 (1 PM) Task leader coordination: Workplan organization, clarification of each partner's contribution. INA: providing samples of real-world semantic audiovisual queries. DCU: work on a use-case on semantics-based interaction with mm. CWI: participate in and coordinate both INA and DCU activities Draft use case for semantic mm presentation: Features for layout design. A user searches on a particular topic or concept and a presentation is created using a number of the search results. The focus here is on how images can be included in the presentation in an aesthetically pleasing way without interfering with the message in the presentation. 7.6 (1 PM) Semantic Web and MM (SWAMM) workshop to be held in WWW06: Organization, reviewing, program
