CWI - Paul Vitányi has been appointed CWI Fellow
from January 1st, 2003. This position is given to outstanding members of
CWI's research staff, enabling them to concentrate completely on research.
Vitányi joined CWI in 1971. Under his direction his research group, now led
by Harry Buhrman, became a world leader in quantum computing, distributed
algorithmics, algorithmic information theory, learning and inference methods,
and reversible adiabatic computing. Together with Ming Li he pioneered applications
of Kolmogorov complexity and co-authored 'An Introduction to Kolmogorov Complexity
and its Applications', Springer-Verlag, New York, 1993 (2nd Edition 1997),
parts of which have been translated into Chinese, Russian and Japanese. The
Chinese version won the 1999 first prize for Excellent Books in Science and
Technology published in China. Vitányi serves on the editorial boards of
several internationally renowned journals. He is also a professor of Computer
Science at the University of Amsterdam.
