Open Source is not enough!

Amazingly, and unexpectedly for some, open source software is really
good. And it's everywhere: as has been said before, you use Linux ten
times a day and don't even know it.

But that doesn't mean it doesn't have its challenges; for instance,
because of the "scratch your own itch" philosophy behind open-source
production, there are itches that don't get properly scratched: as
open source makes further inroads into society, there are more and
more people who use the software who can't program.

But there's more. Software that works together with other software has
more value than standalone software, and we need agreements on how to
represent data, and how to link the data together. Open software,
standards, open data are just some of the things necessary to take us
to the next level of development.
