From the Editor: CHI 98

Steven Pemberton

CHI 98

So we reach the annual CHI issue, and it's just as packed as ever, and it's just as much work to squeeze everything in. I hope you agree that it's as good a CHI issue as we've ever had.

Changes in Editors

This issue is accompanied by some changes in the editorial staff at the SIGCHI Bulletin.

First off, a big welcome to David Novick who is taking over as editor of the World-wide CHI column. David is an American and Director of Research at the European Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Engineering (EURISCO) in Toulouse in the south of France, so is a perfect person for understanding the issues involved. We should extend a big thank you to John Karat and Clare-Marie Karat who have edited the column so ably these past years.

Secondly many thanks to Donald Day, who has been co-editor of the Events column who also leaves this issue to become moderator of SIGCHI's intercultural listserv (chi-intercultural@acm.org). Thanks Donald.

New Column

You will also notice that there is a new column this issue: HCI and the Web. It's clear at CHI conferences, and from the activity on SIGCHI's CHI-WEB mailing list that there is a lot of interest in the Web amongst SIGCHI people, so it was about time the Bulletin had a column dedicated to the subject.

The column is edited by Keith Instone, who was until recently the SIGCHI webmaster, who moderates the CHI-WEB list, and chaired (along with me) the first HCI and the Web Workshop at CHI 96.

I hope you agree that it is a worthy addition to the Bulletin.
