We are now coming to the end of the ACM's 50th Jubilee year, and so to match the ArcCHIve issue of a year ago where we looked back at SIGCHI, and to close the celebration year, this issue looks forward to the future of SIGCHI.
The Chairs give some important news about the future of SIGCHI in the Chairs' Column: don't miss it.
ACM is closing its anniversary year at ACM 97 in San Jose, California from 1-5 March with the theme "The Next 50 Years of Computing", see their web site at http://www.acm.org/acm97, and CHI 97 in Atlanta, Georgia from 22-27 March has "Looking to the Future" as theme; see elsewhere in this issue for a conference preview, and the web site at http://www.acm.org/sigchi/chi97 for full details.
Children are the obvious symbol of the future, and we have a new column starting this issue: Computers and Kids, edited by Alison Druin. Allison was the driving force behind CHIKids at last year's CHI as reported in the last issue of the Bulletin, and is running it again this year at CHI 97. She is also author of the recent book Designing Multimedia Environments for Children, so as you can see, her qualifications are perfect.
This is the last Bulletin before CHI 97; make sure you register before the early registration deadline of 20th February! The advance program will have been mailed to all SIGCHI members at the end of December, but this year for the first time you can register online as well, so zip over to the CHI 97 web site and have a look there.
All the SIGCHI Executive Committee and SIGCHI Bulletin Editors will have ribbons identifying them at the conference, so if you should see one be sure to let them know of ideas you have for SIGCHI or the Bulletin, or just shake their hand and let them know what a great job they are doing.
For many years Xerox has been graciously hosting all the SIGCHI aliases, not only for lists, but also individual aliases, so that <name>.chi@xerox.com was very likely to reach the person in the community you wanted to reach. Thank you Xerox!
However, there are now plans for CHI email to be hosted on ACM's machines at acm.org.
Many of you will be aware that ACM has started offering free mail aliases as a member benefit (so, for instance, you can change your service provider to your heart's content, and still keep the same email address), so we will be using that, along with a whole new set of email lists based at acm.org.
Full details of all this will be in the next issue of the Bulletin, but in the meantime, if you haven't already done so, click along to http://www.acm.org/account/ (taking your ACM membership number with you) and get yourself an email alias, in readiness for the migration, and to ensure you get first pick at the available aliases.
