From the Editor: New SIGCHI Email Addresses

Steven Pemberton

As we said in the previous Bulletin, there were new email addresses on the way to replace the name.chi@xerox.com addresses we have been using for some years. Well, now they have arrived, and Gary Perlman's article in this issue gives all the details.

Not only are personal email aliases changing, but email lists as well: announcements.chi@xerox.com (the most subscribed-to of the SIGCHI lists) for instance, has become chi-announcements@acm.org.

All the new aliases begin with "chi-". This way, all SIGCHI email addresses fall together in the sorted list of all aliases at ACM. If you look on the page opposite, you'll see that all SIGCHI chairs now have an acm.org email alias that reflects their role. Similarly for Bulletin Editors (whose aliases begin "chi- Bulletin"), and if you look at the inside back cover, you'll see that SIGCHI Associate Chairs and Local SIGs similarly have aliases.

So stop using those name.chi aliases, and go straight to Gary's article to learn the fine details of the name-chi aliases, and how to subscribe to the new mail lists.

And don't forget to go along to http://www.acm.org/account/ as well (taking your ACM membership number with you) and get yourself an email alias. Then if you ever have to change your real email address, you only have to change that one alias, and all the mail lists that you are subscribed to will automatically be forwarded to your new address (and if you use a commercial Internet Service Provider, you can change provider at will, and still keep using the same email address).

We should all give Gary Perlman a hearty round of applause for the work he has done in migrating the aliases from Xerox to ACM. I know from close-hand that it was a lot of work, and he has done great work.

Another Change of Guard

Welcome, this issue, to Karen McGraw, who is our new Publications Editor. Karen is the person to approach about book reviews, reports, new book releases, and any other issues related to HCI publications. She can be contacted as chi-bulletin-pubs@acm.org.

After a period of collecting calls for participation and events for the Bulletin, Paul Mullins is leaving as editor of this section of the Bulletin. Thank you Paul for all your work!

Fortunately we have several people in the wings who will take over his duties, who can collectively be reached as chi-bulletin-events@acm.org and will start writing for the next issue.

CHI

Well, CHI is over for another year, but yet, as we speak, next year's CHI is already well under way with its preparations. Go along to http://www.acm.org/sigchi/chi98/ for the details. Watch for a CHI advert with more details in future issues of the Bulletin as well.

The next issue of the Bulletin will be reporting on CHI 97, and all that happened there: the workshops, the SIGs, and all those many other events.
