From the Editor: A Curtain Falls

Steven Pemberton

In 1993 the CHI conference in combination with INTERACT came to Amsterdam, where I live and work. The organisers were looking for someone who knew the conference and knew Amsterdam, and so they asked me if I'd be Local Arrangements Chair for the conference. I accepted and quickly discovered that SIGCHI is a great group of people to work with, so that when I saw that the then-Editor of the SIGCHI Bulletin was leaving to join the then-new interactions, and was looking for someone to take his place, I jumped at the chance to get more involved.

Well, I have now produced 4 volumes of the Bulletin, and I hope that the quality, and the changes that I have made have been acceptable to you all. SIGCHI is an exceptionally broad school, and so I have tried to represent as many streams within SIGCHI as I could find people to write about them. I have also initiated the SIGCHI Bulletin online experiment which has run the last two years and apparently has been to many's taste.

So why all these reminiscences? Well, I am stepping down as Editor-in-Chief of the Bulletin. Why? Because I have been asked, and have accepted, to be the new Editor-in-Chief of interactions...

So I will still be involved with SIGCHI, and I will continue to work on the Bulletin until a there is a new Editor to take my place. By the time you read this a CFE (Call for Editors) will have been published. If you didn't see it, and would like to know more, just get in touch with me.

Conferences

There is a new regular item starting in this issue, and that is the report on SIGCHI Conferences by Gerrit van der Veer, SIGCHI's Vice Chair for Conferences. Apart from CHI, SIGCHI runs and co-sponsors a host of conferences, and Gerrit hopes with his column to keep you more in touch with new developments.

CHI 98

While on the subject of conferences, this is the last issue of the Bulletin before CHI 98 (although CHI 98 is in April and the dateline of the next Bulletin is April, many SIGCHI members don't receive their copy until a month later). So if you are planning to go to CHI, look out for the SIGCHI Bulletin Editors who will be wearing Bulletin ribbons, and be sure to tell them what you would like to see in the Bulletin in the future (and what you think they are doing right as well!)

SIGCHI News

There is a lot of SIGCHI News in this issue. You should check out the accomplishments of the last Executive Committee, and the visions of the new, and there is also news about the plans for SIGCHI to become a society.

Thanks

Thank you all for the support and suggestions you have given me over the last 4 years; thanks to all the people who have worked with me, the area editors and all submitters; and a big thank you to my associate editor, Hans de Graaff, who has been helping me out so ably the last year or so, especially during the difficult period when I was chairing CHI 97 as well as editing the Bulletin.
