A lot happens at CHI conferences -- typically around 275 presentations and events. Sessions such as Papers, Design Briefings, Demonstrations and Videos are fully documented in the conference publications, but many events happen that only get reported on in the Bulletin, sessions such as the Doctoral Consortium, the Basic Research Symposium, Workshops, and Special Interest Groups. This issue, like every October issue, is dedicated to those reports.
New this year was the Development Consortium, designed to develop the field by inviting people to the conference who would not normally come, or be able to come. At CHI 97 it focused on people from soft currency currency countries, in particular Eastern Europe.
Not all workshops are reported on in this issue, so check future issues for more of them.
As promised last issue, the CHI 97 Proceedings and Extended Abstracts, fully indexed, are now online and freely accessible. The place to go is

CHI 98 will be in Los Angeles, April 18th-23rd. Some submissions categories are still open: late-breaking results, student poster and special interest groups. Student volunteers can apply until February 1st, but if I were you, I wouldn't leave it that late.

This is the last of the eight issues that formed the two-year experiment to put the Bulletin online. The SIGCHI Executive Committee will shortly be evaluating the experiment to decide whether the experiment was a success and whether to continue publishing the Bulletin online. You still have a chance to influence the result by letting us know what you think of the Bulletin online.
From time to time I see an announcement on chi-announcements or similar for a workshop or a report or whatever, and I write to the sender and ask if they were planning a report for the Bulletin. "Good idea!" is often the response, and so let me remind all of you that if you have an event or a report, submit it to the Bulletin! The Bulletin is here to keep people in the field informed and up-to-date. If you have something that people would be interested in, let us have it!
