Participants

The Gosei Title is a best-of-five match between the current title bearer and the winner of the main tournament. The main tournament is a knockout tournament. Participants are the winners of the Nihon Ki-in and Kansai Ki-in preliminaries, and the four semifinalists from the previous year. Before the 37th edition, Nihon Ki-in (but not Kansai Ki-in) had the restriction that a player should be at least 5p.

For example, Murakawa Daisuke (3p) from the Kansai Ki-in played in 2006 in the 32nd Gosei main tournament. In 2011 Tsuruta Kazushi (1p) from the Nihon Ki-in played in the 37th Gosei main tournament.

Honorary title

Players who won the Gosei title five or more consecutive times get the Honorary Gosei title. So far these are Otake Hideo, Kobayashi Koichi and Iyama Yuta.
